Expert Q&A

By Melissa Clark Vickers

I am breastfeeding my 4 month old baby. I have a question about when I make love with my husband. He sucks my nipples and tastes my breast for pleasure. Will this be OK for my nipples and will it affect the baby's feeding?

As you may have suspected, this really isn't an unusual activity for couples with nursing babies! The breast is a very sensuous part of the female anatomy, and is often a part of love-making -- regardless of whether there is a baby in the house or not. As for whether there is any problem for your nipples or your baby's feedings, as long as YOU are comfortable with what your husband is doing, then it shouldn't be a problem. That's assuming he isn't biting or tugging on your nipples to the point that he is making your nipples sore, and that the amount of milk he's taking is minimal. Your breasts will make milk based on how much is removed, but your baby needs to have priority when it comes to the bulk of the milk you are producing!

Hope that helps!
