Expert Q&A

Is it safe for my 3-month-old to nurse if I get a shot of novocaine to have a tooth filled?

Novocaine usually only affects the immediate area of the mouth where it is injected (and thus is unlikely to make its way into the milk in significant quantities). It also has a very short half-life, which is a measure of how long the body takes to get rid of the drug. If the feeling has returned to your mouth, the drug is basically out of your system.

In order to minimize any possible risk to your baby, you could nurse him right before you have the shot, and ask for as little of the novocaine as the dentist thinks you'll need for the work you need done. You could always request more if you need it.
