Expert Q&A

By Ann Calandro
BSN, RNC, IBCLC Lactation Consultant

I stopped breastfeeding and I am now pumping. I have a lump in my left breast and it is very painful, but it isn't red. Would you know what it could be? Or, what I could do about it?

Please see your health care provider for an evaluation of the lump. It is not possible to diagnose over the Internet. If it is milk, the lump should go away after pumping, or at least get a lot smaller. Have you tried heat and massage on the area before you pump? Are you using a breast pump that is thorough and removes milk well? If the milk is not removed thoroughly, you could get a blockage in the milk duct, possibly leading to mastitis, and even to an abscess if not taken care of quickly. You may need an antibiotic."
