Is it OK to consume folic acid while breastfeeding?
Folic acid is approved for breastfeeding mothers by the American Academy of Pediatrics. As you may already be aware, studies have shown that women with a deficiency of folic acid are more likely to give birth to infants with spinal malformations (such as spina bifida). Because of this, many doctors now recommend folic acid supplementation before becoming pregnant. This should not interfere with breastfeeding. Please discuss with your health care provider what your specific needs are.
