We got a puppy! After much deliberation, we decided we thought a golden retreiver was the dog for us, so we started calling breeders. On the third call I made, I hit the jackpot. The woman was incredibly personable and told me that when her daughter was three she'd been bitten by a dog and had needed 850 stitches. Later, when they started looking for a family dog, they selected the most gentle, sweet golden retriever they could find. They loved the dog so much that they got more involved with the breed and began breeding goldens. Then she said the magic words: "We specifically breed for a calm and gentle disposition and raise all of our dogs in the house with our kids so they'll be the best family dogs anyone could have."
Bingo! And as an added bonus, the pups were used to cats (the mother dog was also nursing a kitten!) and the breeder only lived about 1 1/2 hours away from us. We hopped in the car (this was last Sunday) and drove there, stopping on the way for a few puppy essentials! I was so excited the whole way there. And a few hours later we were back home with our new little guy, a sweet little fuzzball we have named Xander.
I haven't had a puppy since I was a kid. It's a lot harder when you're the grown-up who has to take care of it! There have been times I feel like I'm doing the newborn thing again. The first night we got up about every 2 hours to take him out, and he wouldn't go back to sleep on his own so I had to cuddle him to sleep before I could lay him down. The third night he got diarrhea (from his worming medicine) and I don't even want to talk about how much sleep I didn't get that night. My husband and I both found ourselves thinking "What did we do?"
But now he's all settled in and he's a great addition to our family. Aden and the puppy do laps chasing each other around the dining room table. When Xander lays down to nap, Aden tries to lie next to him and cuddle with him. And Xander already plays fetch and is more than happy to chase all the balls Aden is willing to throw. They are just so cute together.
Let's see...there's not much other news to report. We had a very nice Thanksgiving and got to see virtually all of our family at some point during the weekend. I have a lot to be thankful for.
I hope everyone reading had a great Thanksgiving too. 19 days until Christmas!
