I know, I know, I’ve promised a quick update before and it seems that I am not actually capable of writing anything remotely brief, short, to-the-point, or quick. But this is going to be just a short flash-back over the last few weeks, because then I want to write down every single thing I remember about the Chicago trip with the TFY gals and post that entry quickly.
The week before Halloween, Aden and I went on a hayrack ride with our AP group. In the middle of the ride there was a corn maze that lead to a pumpkin patch. All of the children got to pick out their own pumpkin and then the hayrack ride took us back to the farmer’s market. Aden had a great time, but every time he picked up a pumpkin and I said, “Okay, is that your pumpkin that you want to take home?” he’d say, “No, this pumpkin dirty!” and set it back down. But of course, pumpkins grow in dirt so they were ALL dirty. Argh. I finally convinced him that Mom needed to help him pick his pumpkin so we could get back on the tractor. :)
On the weekend before Halloween, Aden and I went up to Omaha to visit Derek. We had a great time. We went to “Spooktacular” at the Henry Doorly Zoo and spent over 4 hours walking around. It was wonderful although my hips and pelvis were really aching by the time we got to the car. We also had a first for the baby book—Aden’s first movie in a theater. “Finding Nemo” was a huge success and the best part was when Aden turned to me and asked if we could go see all of those fish at Wal-mart, LOL! You can bet that Santa will be bringing the movie, if not some fish, to our house for Christmas.
Aden also has been singing more and more in the last few weeks. Two favorites are “Ring around the Rosie” and “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” but I’d have to say the one he likes the best is the alphabet song. In the beginning of October his lyrics consisted of “ABC, OOJ, ABC, OOJ…” followed occasionally by “Sing with me” at the end. :) But now he actually gets about three-fourths of the song right, although he still starts out with “ABC, OOJ” every time. He is also really fascinated with letters and numbers in general and is teaching them to himself. He asks us about every letter and number he sees and points them out all over town. Sometimes that takes a bit of patience on my end! But he knows the numbers 0-12 and 20 letters of the alphabet so far, and can also count objects accurately up to 10. I’m in awe of his self-motivation and how quickly he can pick up a new concept. As a psych major I know this is a period of exponential brain development, but it is still amazing to witness in your own child. The scientific knowledge takes a backseat to the miracle that is a child.
And then of course, there is the joy and awe of pregnancy. I am 16 weeks now, feeling better, and enjoying the pregnancy much more. The baby is moving a lot and I feel most of the movements to the side of my belly button now, so my fundus is up pretty high. Derek was able to feel the baby move for the first time last Sunday when I was 15 weeks. I just can’t believe it’s possible to feel the baby so much already when I didn’t feel Aden at all until 17 weeks. I keep wondering how I could have missed all of this last time! Have any other second-timers wondered that?
I still haven’t gained any weight but obviously the baby is doing fine, so there’s plenty of time for that later. My appetite is improving although I am still a much pickier eater than normal. The vegetables and leftovers in my fridge can rest assured that they won’t be eaten by me! My only other real complaints at this stage are the hip and pelvic pain, and a few bouts of gas pain. Clothing is still difficult because so few “normal” shirts are long enough to cover both my slight belly and the stretchy band or panel of maternity jeans. But I’ve made a few small purchases to ease the transition and the cooler weather means I can wear longer sweaters too, so I think (hope!) I will be spending fewer moments in despair in front of my closet. I haven’t seen my doctor again but I have an appointment with my midwife this Saturday and I am really looking forward to visiting with her again.
So… I am going to post this and then get to work on my entry about the Chicago trip! All I will say for now is that I had a blast, loved every one of the women I met, cried when I left, and am incredibly tired from staying up WAY too late talking every night. So stay tuned!
Tara
