I can't believe another Halloween has come and gone. Last year, Halloween was so exciting because of course it was Aden's first Halloween and really it was his first real holiday, since July, August, and September are lacking in major celebratory days. On his first Halloween, I wanted everything to go perfect... and then nothing did. We waited forever for a friend to stop by to trick-or-treat, but they were really late. Then we went out in our car, planning to show off our adorable little pumpkin to a few close friends and family. Everyone we were planning to visit had tired of waiting for us. No one was home. The only people we got to see were my husband's grandparents. They are super nice people but we sat around their house chit-chatting for what felt like an eternity as Aden grew tired and fussy and my hopes for visiting anyone else evaporated. By the time we got home I was pissed and in tears. My perfect Halloween was ruined! I hadn't been able to visit any of my friends, my family all lived too far away, I hadn't been able to show off my adorable son or get any good pictures, and this mom business sucked if I couldn't even bask in the glow of my child's spotlight.
Thank goodness this year was better than that! We had an extended Halloween this year. Last week we went on a hayrack ride at a pumpkin farm. All of the kids got to pick out a pumpkin. I think Aden picked every single pumpkin up before I selected one for him. Then last Saturday my mom and I dressed Aden in his puppy dog costume and went to the local zoo for Spooktacular. They had booths set up along the paths and local businesses decorated and staffed the booths. Aden wanted to hold a piece of candy in each hand at all times. Then whenever someone tried to hand him a new piece, he tried to give them whatever he had in his hand. I thought it was very sweey that he wanted to share!
The actual day of Halloween was very cold and huge snowflakes fell for about an hour in the morning. It was gorgeous to see the snow gathering on the red leaves of the tree in our front yard. The snow didn't stick but the weather remained cloudy and freezing cold. In the afternoon I had planned to meet a group of my mama friends for a trick-or-treat in Aggieville, which is a unique little historical commercial district near the university. That part of the day was a little rocky. Here's how it went:
I was running late (what else is new?) as I tried to get Aden and Katie into their costumes. Hers took me a while as I negotiated tights and hair barrettes (hey, I have a boy!). I weathered a tantrum from Aden as I coaxed them downstairs. I bundled them up and headed for the door. I picked up a trail of costume items (shoes, hair barrettes) that Katie was discarding. Finally, into the double stroller and away we went, 20 minutes late. Thank goodness I knew all of my mama friends would be late too! Then we strolled around Aggieville for about 45 minutes. That was fun, but soon the kids got cold and cranky. Luckily Katie's mom met us then so I only had Aden to deal with as he screamed all the way home. Once we got in the door we collapsed in the entry way. I ate some well deserved chocolate while Aden, now in a fabulous mood, emptied all of the candy from his trick-or-treat bucket.
After dinner, we headed out to walk around our block. Because we live in an old neighborhood near campus, most of our neighbors are either elderly couples or college students. Aden is quite a flirt and he has a rather large fan club of both college girls and old women, so he got lots of attention. Then we got in the car just like last year and headed out to visit a few people who lived further away. Everyone we wanted to see was home and we ended our evening at Derek's granparents' house. By then Aden was tired and a little cranky again, but since it was our last stop before home it was okay. All in all we had a great day!
Also, briefly, I've really been meaning to talk a little about how breastfeeding is going now. I have a little boy who is so busy he barely ever has time for mama milk, and many days he barely nurses once. I'm afraid he's weaning and I'm not ready for it! Hopefully I'll get into it more next time, but I'd love it if anyone who's had a similar experience would post.
Hope everyone else also had a great Halloween. Happy fall everyone!
