Tara's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

October 28, 2002

Okay, I have to admit something...I am a fast food junkie. My favorite is McDonald's. I have lots of childhood memories of collecting toys from Happy Meals and playing scratch-off games where you hoped to get the game piece with one of our Olympic gold medalists' names on it. I still want to win a million dollars by collecting Monopoly game pieces and sticking them to the little game board. I'm thrilled that they introduced a Mac Jr. sandwich and sickened that the Supersize just keeps getting bigger. I love their french fries. And I take Aden to eat there a lot more often than I would like to admit.

I read a statistic recently, probably in a book like "Whole Foods for the Healthy Family" or something like that. I'm not good at remembering statistics but this one said that something like 90% of kids eat fast food once a month. This outraged me until I realized that Aden is one of that 90%. It was a little sobering to think that my little guy not only has fast food once a month, he probably has it nearly once a week.

And then there is that other new study out that talks about foods like french fries having way too much of some chemical that is really, really bad. I don't even want to think about what that is doing to our bodies.

My only defense is that I ate fast food as a kid and lived to tell about it. My mom didn't like to cook very much and neither do I. I almost always manage to get a healthy dinner on the table, and breakfast is easy too. But lunch is another story. If there are leftovers to heat up, great. But if we're out running errands and it's 12:30 and I realize that I'm going to have to go home and cook anything that will take longer than 5 or 10 minutes... hello, McDonald's!

I do have rules. It's not like each of us gets our own Supersize meal. We generally get the smallest size of everything, although smalls have gotten a lot larger over the years. Aden doesn't get french fries until he's eaten some cheeseburger. He drinks water, never pop, and I try to add some fruit to the meal.

So this brings me to wonder if the benefits of extended breastfeeding are going to out weigh the detrimental effects of too many french fries? It makes me feel better to think it does. I don't think I'll be able to use that excuse on our TV watching time though...did I mention I'm also a supernatural sitcom junkie? Charmed, Buffy, Dark Angel, Star Trek, X-Files... you name it and I'll watch it. But I'll get into that later!

And last but not least, a little update from Aden's 15 month check-up. He is 30 1/2 inches (35th percentile) and 22 lbs. 9 oz. (25th percentile) so he is continuing right along his own little growth curve. The doctor gave him a cookie and told me that Aden looks great and his Denver inventory score is advanced by several months. Then Aden impressed the doctor by communicating in no uncertain terms that he wanted another cookie!

Hope everyone has a happy Halloween and Samhain. I'll try to write later this week about Aden's second Halloween and our adventures on a hayrack ride and at the local zoo's annual Spooktacular!
