August 11, 2003
It’s August already? You’re kidding me! This summer has flown by. It won’t be long before the pools close and the temperatures start to drop, then the trees will turn and boom! We’ll be at Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas… we’re definitely on the downside of 2003. Unbelievable.
So what have we been doing these last few weeks? Enjoying some time off! I didn’t have Katie last week so we were able to have a little mini-vacation. Derek, Aden and I headed to my mom’s on Saturday (the 2nd) and then we all got up bright and early on Sunday morning (the 3rd) to visit Thomas the Tank Engine. And by that, I mean a real, full-size Thomas! Several weeks ago we found out that Thomas was coming to a town near us, and given Aden’s current train fascination, how could we pass it up?
We had to park and then ride a bus to the depot where Thomas was “stationed.” Aden was pretty excited about the bus ride itself, but still impatient to see Thomas. As we neared the depot we could see striped tents of every color surrounding the building on one side, and then we saw Thomas sitting on the tracks on the other side. The look on Aden’s face was priceless. He was so excited and talked a mile a minute the entire time.
We got there an hour before our ride so we walked around and checked out what was happening in all of the tents. There was a story-telling tent, a game tent with train tables and pictures to color, a place to get fake tattoos, sporadic visits with Sir Topham Hatt, and lots of food. And of course there was a huge gift shop tent, it was all we could do to restrain my mom in that one! But I must say, I was very impressed. The tents provided shade for every activity (even the boarding lines formed in the shade of 2 big tents) and fans, misters, and free water kept everyone cool.
Aden was glued to the window for the entire 25-minute train ride. We went by houses, trees, fields, and side tracks full of other trains. I got some great pictures of him looking intently out the window. Hopefully I’ll have time to update our website soon with some pictures from that morning.
Derek had to go home that evening but Aden and I stayed at my mom’s for a few more days. I was able to do lots of things I usually can’t do—shop, hang out with my sister, get my hair cut, sleep in—and just being in someone else’s home, where there were no chores for me to do, no laundry or cooking or dishes, was very relaxing. We came home Tuesday evening and spent most of Wednesday and Thursday catching up and visiting my friend Kasee and her new baby Kalee (it’s kind of an odd spelling but it’s pronounced Callie, not Kaylee) who was born Wednesday morning. Aden and Kaden were happy to see each other again after 4 whole days apart. Baby, what baby? They could have cared less, the construction going on outside the hospital window was much more interesting. And yes, I got her scrapbook finished and I gave it to her on Thursday—phew! No more scrapbooking for me anytime soon. :)
Other “ups” in the past week: a cool front moved through giving us gorgeous weather. I got caught up on sleep! Aden was in a great mood all week. Our tax “relief” check came. We have a possible end to this irksome Wells Fargo business (I don’t even want to explain it all, but let’s just say Wells Fargo Home Mortgage BAD!). I finally got some quality time with my husband. I had a fun night out with my friends. I get to start painting and tiling my kitchen soon—I love picking out paint swatches. :) And, last but not least, we are finally making some progress on remodeling the guest room that the washer flooded this spring. What a great mini-vacation week, huh?
But all good things must come to an end… today was back to the real world. Cue, Monday! Derek overslept, I awoke with a pounding headache, and my temp seemed to have dropped only to recover when I took it again at my normal time after dozing fitfully in bed for an hour. Which temp is right? I don’t even want to think about it. I’ve been so hopeful that this was the month, I can’t really explain it all yet but let’s just say I had a really good vibe. And now I’m feeling doubtful again, and cursing this short LP, and thinking it will never happen. No AF yet, so I’m not completely giving up, but I’m feeling low. And then I got Katie back in full cranky mode, and Aden is joining in… Let’s just say we skipped lunch and went straight to an early naptime. My husband told me he has to either switch jobs or insurances in the next month because otherwise we will be left without, well, possibly either. And removing the nasty linoleum on my kitchen walls has brought some rather unpleasant surprises. :(
Stay tuned to see what happens next! It feels rather like a bipolar roller coaster over here. And I say that only half jokingly, but with all proper respect. And please stop to say hi, I need the “company” today!
Tara
