A perfect moment (7-4-04)
Sitting at the park tonight watching fireworks, with Lily on my lap, Derek to one side, and Aden and my mom to the other side, it struck me that I was having a perfect moment. One of those moments you never want to forget, that you want to remember with perfect clarity forever, that you want to be able to relive at any moment. One of those moments when you appreciate everything you have, when nothing else matters, when your life has come together in that way--that perfect way. It didn't matter what else we've struggled through in the past few months, or what new challenges may arise tomorrow, or that I sometimes wonder whether I am indeed "Proud To Be An American." The fireworks were sparkling overhead, Aden was dancing to the music and requesting what color of firework he wanted to see next, Lily was reclining in my lap and flailing her arms in excitement... I was with my family, with my two wonderful children, and I felt so lucky. So happy.
In the last few years I've noticed that I love the fireworks for their nostalgia and their milestones, for the way they mark a specific instance in time, for the memories they evoke--the year I was so pregnant with Aden and wondering at every moment when labor would start, the year that we watched fireworks with him for the first time. And now I will always have the memory of this year, of that perfect moment.
I can't wait for next year.
