Tara's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

April 9, 2003

Since the last two entries (Part 1 and 2 of Aden's birth story) were so serious, I thought today I would just write a lighthearted catch-up of what we've been doing. I joked to someone on my TTM board that I might write a Part 3 for the birth story: a critique titled "What I resent and what I'll do different next time." However, you'll hear plenty about that whenever baby #2 is on the way, so I'll spare you for now!

So, what is new with us? The spring weather, while erratic, has been wonderful and we've been enjoying every day of it. Aden loves being outside. Sometimes it's nearly impossible to persuade him that it's time to come in! But luckily, he also loves playing in the "pseudo-outside" of our upstairs screen porch, which is conveniently located just off our office. Last summer I painted the walls and ceiling sky blue and earlier this spring I fixed it up with a slide, a little child-size table and sun umbrella, two little folding chairs, and some outside toys. We all love it--Aden and Katie play and I can check e-mail! I'm hoping to paint a mural of trees and grass and flowers on the walls too, that would be really fun.

Aden is talking so much now and we are really enjoying being able to have real conversations with him. Tonight after dinner, he asked for more cheese and I told him he couldn't have anymore right now. He said okay and then a minute later he came up and said "Cheese for bafa (breakfast)?" I couldn't believe he thought of that and promised that he could indeed have cheese for breakfast tomorrow.

It's also fun to see his sense of humor developing. A few days ago I asked him if he was a stinky boy (obviously he was, I could smell it from the next room!) and he looked at me and said, "No! Mama stinky!" and then giggled hysterically. I guess the bathroom humor starts early.

Speaking of bathroom, Aden peed on the potty again tonight! And even better, I think it was a little more conscious this time. He doesn't sit on the potty chair as much now (the novelty is gone) but tonight I happened to ask if he wanted to go and he said yes. He sat there, pointed, and talked and I asked if he was going to potty. He nodded and started going. Very exciting! I've been reading some of those "How do you know when it's time to potty train?" checklists and these are the other things I've noticed: He's starting to point to his tummy and diaper before he poops, so he's making the connections. He has the language to talk about it. And he can almost pull his pants on and off. But he is never dry after nap or in the morning and he still seems really young (he won't be 2 until July) so I don't think I'll pursue it yet. Any thoughts from the experienced mamas out there?

And what about experienced dog people? I have a question about Xander, our golden retriever. He is almost 6 months old, is neutered, and is really becoming a great dog. I'm happy to say that he's fabulous with Aden, obeys quite a few commands and hand signs, and isn't having too many accidents anymore. He did decide to do some demolition work to the linoleum in the laundry room, but I can't complain about that because I know he's still a puppy. The problem is, he is really smelly! His kennel is in the kitchen, and my whole kitchen smells like dog, no matter how often I clean. I don't know if it's his age, or the oils in his coat, or the fact that he sleeps in a kennel and it traps the odor on him... but he has one of the strongest dog odors that I've ever smelled. And his ears are the worst, they don't look dirty but they really stink. Baths help but not for long. I hate to pay for a vet visit but I need suggestions. Help!

Back to what's new with me. We got a piano and I have been playing, playing, playing! I am so excited about it. Our piano is actually my grandma's, and it kind of floats around our family to whomever wants it. Hmm, floating pianos, that's kind of an oxymoron. Anyway, it was at my house growing up and I took lessons on it for years. Then it went to my uncle's and now I have it again!

I also got tired of waiting for Derek to build us a new family webpage (our old one got accidentally deleted--long story) so I made one. It was very frustrating at times, but I did it and it looks good and I'm pretty dang proud of myself. I will put the address at the bottom of the entry, come check it out!

And on that note, I'll wrap up. I know there's probably more to tell you about but I have rambled enough for one entry. Have a happy spring, everyone!
