"Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!" (2-7-04)
The last few days have been better and we’ve really been enjoying all of the snow we’ve gotten. It has snowed nearly every day this week, and we must have nearly a foot accumulated by now. We haven’t had a “real” winter like this in a while and it’s a lot of fun. I love wintertime and snow—I’ll take this over the heat and humidity of August any day! Derek has been out shoveling every day (thank goodness he’s home, I can only imagine what my pelvic separation pain would feel like after shoveling!) and he and Aden are working on a giant snowman.
I have to say, money worries aside, that it’s really nice having Derek home. Aden loves having Dad around and we’ve also been able to get a lot done around the house. It’s good timing because my nesting instinct has been kicking in loud and clear. There’s a lot I *need* to work on before the baby comes and luckily home improvement is the one area of our life that we can afford to spend money on, because we got a lot of Christmas money that we specifically set aside for that. Our “to do before the baby comes” list is really long—honestly I went room to room throughout the entire house and have a list that covers the front and back of an 8 ½ x 11” sheet of paper!—and I was starting to feel a little antsy about how much would really get done. The list is still long but I’m feeling better. I’ve been cleaning out and organizing everything from the baby’s room to our filing cabinet to the hall closet. We had a dripping faucet in our bathroom that I wanted fixed, and unfortunately once it was apart we discovered that our sink is so old that replacement parts can’t be found, so now we are the owners of a shiny new bathroom sink and faucet set. The latest project is to finish painting the kitchen cabinets and to get the wainscoting up in there—I wanted to do that months ago, remember?—and then I’m going to paint the bathroom, and then… well, I could go on forever. But anyway, we’ve been very busy and productive. The only drawback is that by getting caught up on that part of my life, I’m falling further behind in other areas—like the computer! *blush*
We spent our day today in Lawrence to visit Fran and go out for Derek’s birthday. Everything looks great with the baby, and at 29 weeks I’m measuring 32 cm—3 weeks ahead! The measurements just keep getting more ahead, which surprises me a little but doesn’t concern me. I think it’s kind of neat, actually—like, hey, look what a great job my body is doing growing this baby! My mom came along for the first part of the visit, which had me a little nervous (since she is not completely sold on our homebirth plans and I haven’t told her yet that I don’t want her present at the birth) but it went fine. She was fairly quiet and didn’t stay long but seemed to like Fran.
After the appointment Mom watched Aden while Derek and I went to dinner and to see a performance by The Canadian Brass, an absolutely amazing brass quintet. As long as I’ve known Derek, he’s been dying to see two groups: Aerosmith and The Canadian Brass. I bought these tickets months ago, and they were a bit of a splurge even then, but with our current financial situation I was so glad I’d already bought them and was able to take him out to do something fun for his birthday. We really needed to get away for a while as a couple, take our mind off our problems, and remember that we enjoy each other’s company as two adults and not just as Aden’s mom and dad. We were able to reconnect and it helped me put everything back into perspective. It was really wonderful. :)
