"Fenced in and loving it!" (1-17-04)
Maybe this indicates how lame and boring our life is, but we are going to have a fenced yard soon and I am so excited! Our parents—all four, count ‘em, four sets of them—went in on fencing materials as a joint Christmas present because they knew how desperately we wanted a fenced yard and how much we couldn’t afford it. Honestly, we wanted a fence so bad that it’s one of the best Christmas presents I’ve ever received. Of course, I’ve been waiting impatiently for a month now, trying to calculate exactly when the ground will thaw so we can start setting those fence posts. :P And then… Derek surprised me last night by coming home from Omaha early so he could start putting the fence up this weekend! We’ve had a stretch of warmer weather and warm drizzly rain that has softened the ground up just enough. All of the holes are dug and we’re setting posts today, so hopefully by the end of the weekend it will all be done.
Really, this may not seem like much to report but it makes me so happy! A few more days and I’ll be able to open the back door to let the dog out instead of taking him out on a leash in the freezing cold… This spring I’ll be able to sit on the patio and nurse the baby while Aden plays and I won’t have to worry that he’ll wander off to the street… Amazing how the little things can make a person’s day!
We also had a wonderful visit with our midwife Fran today. She came to our house and Aden was awake this time (last time he was napping) so he sat on the bed with me while she measured my belly, listened to the heartbeat, etc. He thought it was all pretty neat and he had to show her his “tools” that he uses on my belly. She was quite impressed by the wrench that doubles as a Doppler! :) I measured about 2 weeks ahead again and everything else was great. At 26 weeks I’ve only gained half of what I had with Aden—8 pounds versus 16. Since there were an extra 8 pounds that hung on for nearly 2 years after I had Aden, I find myself hoping that maybe those are the 8 I haven’t gained this time, LOL! But we’ll see what happens in the long run.
I’ve been a little worried about anemia because I’m tired a lot and I know my diet is not especially rich in iron. I don’t think Fran was too concerned since iron levels are generally lowest at this point in the pregnancy and then naturally improve toward the end, but we agreed that the fact I can take my prenatals again is very helpful and that I should also start taking alfalfa tablets to help my iron rebound faster. Next time we’ll do a finger stick to check the actual levels. I was also having a lot of concerns about tearing while pushing and we had a long talk about my worries. I felt incredibly reassured afterward. Really, I already knew in my head that things would be different this time but I just needed to verbalize it all, have her understand and validate what I was saying, and hear the reassurances that things will be handled completely differently in this birth. It made me feel so much better. Midwives are just awesome. :)
