Today, Aden and Katie were playing in the kitchen and doing a quite thorough job of unloading one of the bottom cabinets. As I walked through to take Xander outside I had to weave through piles of plastic cups, metal mixing bowls, cooling racks, and the like. Apparently, the back door didn't latch and the next thing I knew, Aden was on the back porch, waving and smiling at me. He disappeared and came back wearing a metal colander on his head--one of his favorite play "hats."
Then I heard a bunch of noise and ran frantically up the steps to check on him, afraid he had gotten hurt on one of the many pieces of junk stored on the back porch. Here was the sight I saw: Aden, still wearing the metal colander, charging full speed at the back door, holding a 4 foot long metal corner guard as if it was a sword or lance. He was my own little Don Quixote, tilting at the windmill as if it were a giant!
It was so cute and so reminiscent of that scene from "Man of La Mancha," which happens to be one of my favorite musicals, although Aden has never seen it. I couldn't help but grin.
He's been catching me off guard a lot. Sometimes it's funny things like that. Other times, it's gestures of kindness towards another child, or Xander, or a stranger at Wal-mart. Even more often, it's the awe I feel at merely witnessing his development. You know those mama moments where your child does something so funny, so creative, so sweet, that your heart swells just a tiny bit because it can't quite hold all the love you have for him? Well, my heart has been growing a lot lately. Children are such a gift. How can we ever thank them for the way they change us and the love they bring us?
