Suton's Diary Entries

August 20, 2001

Our house is currently under seige! TWO monsters, the Teething Monster and the No Sleep Monster, are paying us a visit these days. Harry is currently known as the Teething Monster. This is not our first visit from the beast, but IS our worst yet. Harry is 14 months almost to the day, and still has only 4 teeth...There is a new tooth which has SEEMED ready to pop for about 4 weeks now, this is the tooth that appears to have invited and then welcomed with open arms, the TM (Teething Monster). I am ready to murder that tooth if it ever actually makes it past the gums and shows its aggravating little face!!! Poor Harry is, as you might guess, not fond of the TM. We are dosing him with Tylenol just about constantly, and every day we look in the mouth to see if the tooth has yet appeared, to no avail. Hazel's teeth were slow coming, too, but the TM was nowhere near as fierce in Hazel's day. Harry wants to be held most of the time (MORE than usual, remember this IS the child known as "Hold-Me-Harry") As for Harry's nursing habits, he is either slowly having a dwindling interest in nursing, or the TM is making it painful to suckle on occasion. Several times in the past few days, Harry has only nursed for a few minutes, then refused to continue. I THINK it is most likely the TM, but suppose only time will tell.
As for the No Sleep Monster (NSM),SHE is visiting our sweet Hazel! Hazel has ALWAYS been an excellent sleeper, both at naptimes and at bedtime. ALWAYS. I may have mentioned before that Hazel started sleeping through the night at 5 weeks and never missed a night thereafter (except during occasional visits from the aforementioned TM)? WELL, the NSM is here, and Miss Hazellypoop DOES NOT want to be in or anywhere near her bed until she is so exhausted she is practically delirious! We transferred her into her "big girl bed" in June, and up until now, it had gone super-smoothly! Well, we've been gating her into her room for a couple of weeks (started after the initial visit of the NSM), and as of this past week, Hazel has become an expert gateclimber, soooooooo...So much for THAT solution! As with most monsters, I am very much hoping that this is just a temporary, albiet extended visit from the NSM. I feel a bit like a "new mom" again, as I have not had an uninterrupted night of sleep in quite some time.
PLEASE, if you have any sort of repoire with either of these monsters, ASK THEM TO LEAVE US ALONE and bother somebody ELSE for a while???????
Signing off from Monsterland...
