Follow this nursing mom of 1yr old Harry & 2yr old sis Hazel
November 30, 1999
I've just celebrated my little man's first birthday, and can't possibly think of a better time to start this diary!
What a year it has been!
My first daughter, Hazel, is almost 2 1/2, just 16 months older than my little nursling, Harry, who turned one on June 19th.,2001.
I've had wonderful, although very different, nursing relationships with both of my babies.
Hazel and Harry were both great nurslings from the beginning, although I must say, I suffered rather sore nipples with both, although I was told they BOTH latched on just right. I think the fact that they were both humongous may have had something to do with that. Voracious appetites perhaps accompany large babies? Hazel was 9lbs. 1oz. and Harry was a whopping 10lbs. 10oz. These babies were HUNGRY and made no bones about it!
Aside from a couple weeks of achy nipples, my nursing relationships with both of my babies began and continued beautifully.
Hazel began to wean herself (much to my chagrin) at 6 months. It seemed to me that the moment she was able to pick up a cheerio, she lost interest in the breast. We continued nursing up until she was about 8 1/2 months, when I discovered I was expecting another baby. I had every intention of trying to continue nursing through the pregnancy, but after several weeks of essentially "forcing" her onto the breast, I really decided she had weaned herself, and not vice-versa. She's always been incredibly independent, and now I can see that her wanting to wean when she was able to "feed herself" was just the first sign of that independent spirit. At the time I was quite conflicted, though, as I had really imagined nursing her through at least most of her first year, if not beyond. My OB's staff had recommended weaning at the onset of pregnancy, and I was ready to fight them tooth and nail, but my little girl baby had her own agenda. SO, after a good bit of trying to keep her nursing, I let her have her way, and awaited the arrival of my next little nursling!
My 2nd pregnancy moved so fast...Having a little one (she was 7 months when I conceived) kept my mind so much more occupied than during that first pregnancy. Both of my pregnancies were very smooth, although I did gain an "unexpected" amount of weight with both. Of course once my doctors and I realized I was growing large people in there, we all relaxed a bit about the weight gain. Ha ha ha.
Harry arrived on June 19th (10 days over-due) in less than 2 hours of labor. I'll post his birth-story in a later diary entry, it was QUITE amazing!
He nursed so voraciously that my milk came in within 24 hours!
He is now a big, handsome one-year-old who nurses JUST as voraciously, although it's now only 2-3 times a day instead of every hour & a half (as it was those first THREE months!)
I look forward to sharing my stories and adventures with all of you who may be interested in reading!
