Stephanie and Nursling Rhys born 5/17
November 30, 1999
My name is Stephanie and I have been married for almost 4 years. My husband and I began
trying to get pregnant as soon as we were married but after 2 1/2 years we finally conceded that
perhaps it wouldn't happen for us without intervention. We went to our family doctor and had the
preliminary fertility work-up done and everything looked good. She then sent a referral to a
fertility specialist for more testing but before we even got an appointment with that doctor we
discovered we were pregnant!
Our son was born on May 17, 2002. Rhys (pronounced "reese" for those who were wondering) was
supposed to be born at home with a midwife but due to the fact that he was 16 days late we ended up
being induced in the hospital. After 17 hours I had gone from a dilation of 2cm at the start of the
induction to 4cm. At that point the OB to whom my care had been transferred for the induction
recommended a c-section so that is how Rhys came into the world!
I guess it was a combination of the time it took for us to get pregnant and the homebirth turned
induction turned c-section which made my succeeding at breastfeeding so important to me. Even
before Rhys was conceived I knew that I would breastfeed and I also knew that I wanted to
breastfeed for longer than the average in our society.
Rhys is now almost 5 months old and is still exclusively breastfed. I am planning to introduce
solids slowly beginning at around 6 months.
The thing I like best about breastfeeding is that it MAKES me take time for just Rhys and I.
Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the day to day grind which sometimes describes parenthood
and I find that nursing helps me to reconnect with Rhys in a very special way.
Right around the three month mark Rhys started to get very distractable when nursing. I found at
that point that the best way for us to nurse is to go into a darkened room and nurse lying down.
Rhys will eat if we are out and about but he has to be really hungry and he still won't eat very
well.
I look forward to sharing our breastfeeding experience with others.
Steph
