Nobody ever said raising a child would be easy. I don’t think anybody could ever really prepare you for the amount of worry.
My DH and I work close enough to daycare that we can sometimes use our lunch break to see Lily. Today we went to see her and she was looking a little tired (she had not taken a nap) but was crawling and standing.
Well, while we were there, she fell backwards from standing and hit her head very hard on the ground (industrial carpet, not very padded). I picked her up to comfort her and she began crying. She then started to hold her breath, pass out and went limp. I blew in her face and she started to breathe. She was NOT happy, and kind of limp. Then she vomited on me. We called our doctor’s office and they told us to go to the ER.
By the time we got to the car Lily was her playful self. The doctors at the ER examined her and they said she looked fine. She does not even have a bump on her head.
This experience goes along with Lily’s other two episodes (see 7/16/01 entry). It really does look like she is one of those kids who can hold their breath until they pass out. It is scary but good to know that nothing is seriously wrong with her.
But it is heartbreaking to see your child not breathing. You feel totally helpless. My DH had a better look at her when she smacked her head and he kept talking about how she hit hard enough that you could see her head bounce back up. I could see how helpless he felt.
ON BREASTFEEDING:
Lily is still nursing and I am still pumping for daycare. I think she will self wean when we introduce cow’s milk when she is a year old. But I do think she still would like to nurse in the mornings or if she is upset. Other times it seems like it is just a food source for her.
We both have thrush. Lily got it after antibiotics for an ear infection and she passed it on to me. The medicine seems to be taking care of the problem. It never really hurt me too badly. It was just a little soreness when she would breastfeed (kind of like engorgement) and a small rash.
Other than that all is well. It is fun to watch Lily crawl everywhere and try to get into things she shouldn’t. My DH and I are lucky that our employer understands when we have to take off with emergencies. I know other people aren’t so lucky. Hopefully we won’t have to do it anymore.
