Sherry's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

July 16, 2001

Lily gave us quite a scare last month. We got one of those calls any parent who has a child in daycare dreads.

“Lily is okay now, but she turned blue and stopped breathing.”

This was 6/7/01. My husband and I work for the same company and were able to run out the door to pick her up (10 to 15mins away). 911 was called but was turned back when it was reported that she was alert, breathing and crying.

It was our understanding that she was just sitting on a mat, cried a little and leaned forward, when the daycare work went to pick her up she was limp and turning blue.

We rushed her to the doctor. She appeared okay and from the way we understood what happened, It was decided she probably held her breath while crying. The next day at daycare the workers stressed that it was not typical breath holding where the child throws a fit, cries, turns blue and passes out.

When we called our doctor’s office and told them what our daycare was saying we were told to schedule an EEG. That was set for 6/20/01.

On 6/15/01 we got another call. She had done the same type thing. This time it happened in a worker’s arms. She never turned blue. She just was limp and not breathing.

This time we rushed her to the ER. Seven hours, an EKG, Chest X-RAY, and blood-work up later we had ruled out a bunch of things but still didn’t know what caused it.

On a humorous note, we were in the ER so long that Lily crawled for the first time for us. She just crawled down the exam table when we were waiting to be released. She was going after some drinking straws at the head of the bed. It was also the first time we saw her sit up from her stomach (now she did have red marks on her knees that day so we figured she really began this in daycare earlier in the day. I checked with her workers and she had already crawled a little for them).

We kept her EEG appointment on 6/20/01. This is where breastfeeding came in very handy. We were told to keep her up for 6 hours prior to the appointment. She was crabby when they glued the 20+ things to her head. They told me I could nurse her to sleep. It worked like a charm. It was wonderful to feel that I was actually helping. When you have a baby going through something like this you just feel out of control. The simple act of breastfeeding made me feel like I had some control.

Her EEG came back normal. So we still don’t know what caused the problem. One common thread was lunch. Both days she had pasta with eggs in it. But her episodes were not really the way a food allergy would happen. But just to be safe, Lily is now on a pasta and egg free diet.

It has been just over a month that Lily has been episode free.
