Sarah G's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

October 4, 2000

I had my second prenatal appointment on Monday, and it was rather interesting. Stone came with me, and he was running late, but we got there right on time. And I didn't get lost at all. :) Jacob stayed out in the waiting room with Stone, and played with markers the receptionist gave him. I met the midwife I'll be seeing most often, although I'll be seeing them all on occassion. When the baby is born, I'll be with the midwife on call then, and so they want me to be comfortable with them all. I like this idea. I really like this midwife. She explains things in great detail without making me feel dumb, and answers all my questions.

I had a physical exam, and a pap smear. This was done quickly, and with an audience. A nursing student on her maternity rotation was there with my permission. I'm normally a very shy person, but I'm all for education -- even if it puts me on display. We talked about my due date, and the midwife thought it had been calculated incorrectly last time. She now thought I was due April 9th, instead of May 9th, which made me 12 weeks pregnant. I disagreed, knowing that was impossible. She recalculated it again, and it turns out I was right. She had made a very small error which threw off the whole thing. I was impressed with how straight forward she was about admitting it. It made me like her all the more.

She said that they usually recommend that their patients wean their nursing children by five months into the pregnancy. But, she also said that they have had a few breastfeed all the way through, and then tandem nurse. I hope to be one of those women, although I will wean in a heartbeat if I feel my unborn baby is threatened. Jacob is old enough, and could resume nursing after the baby was born, if he wished. Or maybe I'll make his cold cereal in the morning with breastmilk. :)
