Sarah G's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

September 27, 2000

Hello all! I had my appointment on Monday, and here's what happened. I got up ridiculously early on Monday morning, because I couldn't sleep. And, I left without eating. I was feeling terribly queasy. Jacob and I left at 7:30 a.m. and arrived at the doctor's office at 9 a.m.. <sigh> I got lost.

Well, once there, Jacob was a doll in the waiting room, eating the raisins I brought. But when I was finally called to talk to the nurse (the only person I was going to see today as a new patient), he absolutely threw a fit. The nurse had a water dispenser in her office, and Jacob *had* to play with it. He spent the rest of our conversation screaming. The nurse was wonderful about it, being very understanding. I am endlessly grateful.

We discussed my medical history, and she was very pleased about how healthy I am. According to my LMP, she guessed my due date to be April 23. I tried to explain to her that my cycles are around 37 days long, so the traditional 28-day scale wasn't going to work for me. She just smiled and nodded. We talked about what kind of care I wanted. This clinic has a set of women doctors, and a set of women midwives. The midwives focus on a more natural labor and delivery, and that's who I chose. I am not afraid of the pain of birth.

Then she had me pee in a cup (and that gets rather annoying after a while), and she weighed me. I weigh exactly the same as I did before I got pregnant, 116 pounds. Then we went to another room to see if we could hear the heartbeat. When we couldn't, I was not at all worried. I knew I wasn't as far along as the nurse thought I was, and besides, lots of women can't hear the heartbeat until 18 weeks. But I was happily suprised when the nurse got the ultrasound machine.

And we saw my baby! So very tiny! And, a little blinking heartbeat. I was officially determined to be seven weeks and five days pregnant -- exactly 8 weeks today. And my due date is now May 9, 2001. I couldn't be more pleased. :) The only bad news is that Stone's college finals are the first two weeks of May. I thought it was funny, but he didn't. <grin>

I have another appointment on October 2, to meet the midwives, and have a physical exam. Stone will be coming to that one, as he has no tests, and I've given him fair warning. He was very enthusiastic about coming. He had really wanted to join me this time. I cannot manage Jacob very well alone, especially during my next appointment, when I'll be basically immobile. :)

Meanwhile, Jacob has been sick with allergies. Being so stuffed up makes it very hard for my little boy to nurse. :( He has to hold his breath, suck for a moment, then gasp for air. And this only seems to happen at night. I think it's because he's laying down and the mucus can't drain. I gave him some decongestant, but it didn't seem to help very much -- he's just been miserable. Although, not nearly as miserable as I am. He and I are allergic to the same things, except I'm not supposed to be taking any antihistamines until I'm at least 12 weeks. So I'm constantly sneezing, my eyes watering, my nose running and my head hurts. Blah. I know it's no cold, because it comes and goes, and we have no fevers. I'm limited to Tylenol, which I try not to take. Medications of any sort make me nervous, and I'd rather suffer than make myself afraid for my baby.

So, that's that. :) All is good, except for the allergies, even my morning sickness is fading!
