What you can do now.
1. Buy stock. Buy any US stock, any number of shares. If we can buy stocks like we have donated our blood, we may stave off a stock market plunge. I'm going to buy a share of Marvel Comics tomorrow.
2. Donate blood, and sign your donor cards. Call your local Blood and Tissue center and make an appointment to donate blood, since most centers are amazingly overwhelmed by donors and unable to take more. Note: Pregnant women may not donate.
3. Volunteer. Anywhere. You are needed.
4. Write a journal, with dates, clippings, photos, anything that is important and significant to you.
5. Hug your loved ones. Hug your neighbors. Hug random people on the street. Hug people you don't like.
6. Make love. The more love we release into the universe, the better. Rejoice in your life force and share that force far and wide. There are people in desperate need, and pain.
7. Plant vegetables, fruits, trees, flowers, anything that will grow. This is a good time of year to transplant trees, and to lay in your winter crop (for much of the US). There is no shortage of produce, but the very act of growing something alive will be good for your soul.
8. Adopt a pet from an animal shelter. It'll be good for your soul.
9. Don't worry about an oil/gasoline shortage. Relax. Buy gasoline as you need it. Stockpiling will only drive prices up.
10. Donate money to the Red Cross or the Salvation Army.
11. If you are a member of MyPoints.com, donate your points to the Red Cross.
12. Hang a US flag on your house.
13. Wear a yellow ribbon for those lost.
14. Go to work, go to school, and go on with your life. Show the terrorists that they cannot shut us down.
15. Share what you have.
16. Pray, meditate, cast a circle, do whatever you do to connect and to refocus. Faith is faith, in whatever form, and is an incredible bond.
17. Remember that people from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Palestine, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, and Morocco are not all the same. They are as varied as anyone else. They are as blameless as any American. A group of terrorists, of murderers, did this. Not a nation, not a race, not a country, and not a religion.
What you should not do now:
1. Do not argue with people over politics or religion or race. Hate breeds hate, and we've had enough of that.
2. Do not allow yourself to be buried in fear, or sorrow, or guilt. Grief is natural and shouldn't be buried, but try to do something life-affirming everyday, like planting flowers, or adopting a puppy. You are alive, and there is much to be done. We need you.
3. Do not commit acts of violence. Against anyone. It must end now. Fighting among ourselves will tear us apart, at the time when we need to show a tremendously unified, powerfully righteously angry, country. We must stand together.
4. Do not watch the news all day. It eats at your soul. Turn off the tv and go outside. Find someone and hold his or her hand. Do something helpful and positive and strengthening and loving.
Blessed be.
