Sarah G's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

September 13, 2000

Today Jacob is 20 months old. It is hard to believe that he's almost 2 years old. He nurses often during the day, and a couple of times at night. He has a fascination for things with buttons, and can easily change the channel on my TV, or close all the browser windows on my computer ... He's a very good eater, not at all picky, although lately he's been finicky about *how* he eats his food. He wants all the different foods seperate, and will spend considerable time carefully picking side dishes apart if they touch.

I finally received my Medicaid number in the mail, and immediately called the midwife practice of my choice and made my first appointment. I go in September 25, at 9 a.m., and I'm allowed to bring Jacob, which is great because there's no way I could get a babysitter. Unfortuneately, Stone won't be able to come unless he skips his morning class. And that's something I am certainly going to discourage, because it's so important that he do well in college. Besides, I don't expect this first appointment to be that interesting for him. It will probably be getting to know the midwives and filling out paperwork, and a pelvic exam.

I am, however, quite excited about the appointment, and hope that we may hear the baby's heartbeat.

I'm also a bit nervous about what they will say about my nursing while pregnant. So far I have received nothing but positive responses, and expect the same from these professionals. But I have heard horror stories about doctors telling mothers they have to wean.

At any rate, I am more excited than nervous, and can hardly wait. And on the nursing front (no pun intended), Jacob is nursing more and more. The nursing sessions have become shorter, too, so it's like he's snacking. I try to discourage that whenever possible, as it's not a habit I enjoy. I offer him food or drink when he seems to be snacking, and usually he's quite happy about it. And when he refuses, I know it's because he really wants to nurse, and so we do.

I'm still quite tender, but it's abating. I didn't expect it to last for long, as breastfeeding is old hat for me. I've been lactating for 20 months! It seems incredible ... And it could be years before I stop. <laugh> Who knows, I may continue this pattern of getting pregnant while breastfeeding, and not stop lactating until my last child weans himself or herself!

I can always hope ... :)
