Hola Faithful Readers, I’m sorry for the delay between posts.
Yesterday, the boys had checkups. Logan is ten weeks old and Jake is 2 and a half years old. Jake weighs in at 29 pounds (13.3kg), and 34 inches (86.38cm) tall. He behaved himself very well, opening his mouth to show the doctor his teeth, holding the stethoscope to his chest, letting her look in his ears… I was so proud.
The doctor was also very happy about his vocabulary. Y’all remember how we were worried about his speech development. Well, we are worried no more! I stopped counting his words around 300, and now he can repeat almost anything anyone says. The doctor asked about milestones like stacking blocks, washing hands, dressing self, and we laughed because Jake was busily trying to dial her pager, run the blood pressure cuff, and climb the examining table to get to the equipment. All he wanted was the technology, and it was obvious that Jake’s fine motor skills were well established.
Logan astounded everyone with his weight: 15 pounds 13 ounces (7.2kg)! That is a seven pound gain in just 8 weeks, and now he’s in the 97th percentile. He’s also gained three inches in length, from 20 to 23 inches (51.4 to 58.4cm). The pediatrician was impressed.
I got commended for continuing to exclusively breastfeed Logan, and got no flack at all about nursing Jake at 30 months. The doctor told me I could start some solids at four months, but when I told her I plan to delay solids, she smiled really big and told me the decision was mine. She also has no issues about cosleeping or the wait-and-see approach to antibiotics. It’s that kind of thing that is the reason I drive 30 miles one way to see her.
Logan got his two-month vaccinations. Seven immunizations in four shots, and my poor Logan screamed and turned purple. When Jake got his shots as a baby, I don’t remember him ever reacting that way. I was very surprised. It also took Logan quite some time to calm down enough to nurse. Once he had calmed down, we made the hour trip back home.
Today, we had a WIC appointment. And I sat stupidly in the waiting room, waiting to be called back to get my food coupons, as they kept asking for people who were there to take the class. I knew nothing about any class, so I kept my seat. Finally the lady asked for me by name, and told me I was there to take the 10am class. Apparently they put ‘cl’ on my appointment card, which I was supposed to automatically understand meant my next appointment was a class. (sigh) It had looked like a clumsy lowercase letter ‘a’ to me, and I thought that meant a.m. The class wasn’t really a class, but more of a meeting to discuss breastfeeding. The WIC lady was very nice, but she sounded very tired. I was in the room with three other women. Two of them had three-month olds, and both were planning on starting solids at four months, and one of them was going to start formula then too. I said nothing, but now I wish I’d spoken up, at least to find out why she would give formula after successfully breastfeeding for three months. The other lady had a 4-year old daughter she’d nursed for 6 months, and hoped to nurse her 4-month old son longer than that. According to the WIC lady, I was the 6th mother she’d met who nursed two children at once.
All in all, the meeting was rather dull, and unenlightening, but no one was rude or surprised about breastfeeding for 30 months. I also got my food coupons, and vouchers for the Farmer’s Market.
Logan is still not sleeping through the night, and it never even occurs to me to think about it, until someone asks, ‘Is he sleeping through the night yet?’ Neither is Jake, most of the time, and neither am I for that matter! (laugh) I just adapt as best I can to my children’s internal schedules, and we manage just fine.
