We are working out the kinks in complicated cosleeping. (smile) Before, it was just Jake and I in a double bed. He could nurse whenever he wanted, and sleep on either side of me. Now, it’s Logan and I in the double bed and Jake in the crib-as-sidecar. Logan can nurse whenever he wants, because he’s the newborn, but Jake has to either wait his turn or nurse from the other side (over my back, from behind… You have to be nursing a toddler to know what I mean. (grin)) which is uncomfortable for both of us. And Jake doesn’t get to sleep on either side of the bed anymore. My goal is to stay between Logan and Jake at night because Jake tends to fling himself around in his sleep.
Logan sleeps all night. No, I mean it. That doesn’t mean I do. I’m still ‘programmed’ to wake up frequently to pee even though my bladder is no longer being crushed. (laugh) And it doesn’t mean he goes all night without eating. He’ll nurse three or four times a night. That is the beauty of breastfeeding and cosleeping. I wake up when Logan starts to make hungry noises and rooting in his sleep. And I can get him latched on then go back to sleep myself. There isn’t a time all night that he actually wakes up and cries. Jake, on the other hand…
After three weeks, Jake is finally sleeping all the way through the night, like he was doing before Logan was born. While we were adjusting, he would wake up crying several times a night, looking for me. I would touch him or talk to him for a bit and back to sleep he’d go, for the most part. A couple of times he would want to nurse, and I could roll over, being careful not to jar the baby, and nurse him back to sleep. Which would leave me wide awake. Argh. My boys got more sleep than I did. (sigh)
But we are all getting more sleep now. A thing that is in relatively constant flux for all parents. It’s smooth now, but that could change at any moment. A new tooth, a cold, a nightmare, and it’ll be back to spotty sleep. I’ll enjoy it while I’ve got it. :)
