Yesterday, Logan had his two-week checkup, and I’m proud to say that he weighs 9 pounds 4 ounces, a gain of 12 ounces in a week! And he’s grown an inch too! I’m so pleased. Dr. B. was very pleased too. She said he looks perfectly healthy. He had a bit of blood work done, the routine newborn screening repeat, and another blood count at the request of the neonatologist from the hospital, who was concerned about his hemoglobin levels after having jaundice. I expect the pediatrician’s nurse to call me today with those results. I won’t have to take either kid back until the middle of July, when I’ve made an appointment for the both of them. Logan will be two months old, and ready for his next round of immunizations. And Jake will be two and a half, ready for his next routine checkup. I’m glad I was able to have both boys seen on the same day because the trip is almost an hour each way. Ugh.
Breastfeeding is going fabulously. I’ve stopped trying to pay attention to when Logan nurses and for how long, because it gets very confusing when you throw in a nursing toddler. I forget who nursed when and for how long and on what side. I just nurse whoever is hungry on the side that feels the fullest. (laugh)
Jake, who used to nurse three or four times a day, now wants to nurse very frequently. If I’m feeding Logan, and Jake wants to nurse too (often), what we do is lower my office chair all the way down and Jake stands next to me and nurses. I haven’t figured out how to hold them both and nurse. Jake doesn’t like to have Logan lay upon him, and it’s really too hot for all three of us to be in one small area. (We have precious little air conditioning in the house.) So I try to encourage Jake to wait until Logan is done, especially since he can’t stand still for long (and I’d never expect a two year old to stand still) and bounces and twists and dances and turns to watch the TV, all the while remaining tightly latched. Ouch! But Jake doesn’t understand having to wait to nurse. He’s never had to wait before. I know patience is an important lesson to learn, but it’s hard going, and I dislike Logan being the reason for the lesson.
Today was our first outing, all three of us together. I had to go to my WIC appointment, and had no babysitter for Jake. I was anticipating much trouble, but it was actually quite easy. Jake behaved himself nicely, and Logan slept most of the time. Because I’m exclusively breastfeeding, I got vouchers for lots of extra food, and the caseworker was very, very happy. I was again surprised about how accepting she was that I am tandem nursing. She was downright excited. It was cool. (grin)
