Today I went to see my midwife because I'm sick. My regular appointment was Feb. 6 and I'm 25 weeks today.
I weigh 138.5 on their scale, and my blood pressure is low/good. I'm measuring at 26 weeks, and Melanie (my midwife) is very pleased with my pregnancy.
Melanie thinks I have some sort of viral infection, and my lungs sound clear, so she didn't give me an antibiotic like I expected. She did do a throat culture to double check her diagnosis, which I *really* appreciate. She'll call with the results. After looking into my poor bloodshot eyes, she wrote a prescription for some antibiotic/steroid eye drops, which I picked up on the way home.
My next appointment is Feb. 14 and I'll be doing the glucose tolerance test then. I actually have the orange glucola sitting in my fridge now.
I learned recently that my mother has gestational diabetes with every one of her pregnancies. I was flabbergasted. That is exactly the sort of thing she's supposed to tell me! (laugh) Of course, I should have asked... We have a lot of diabetes in my family, but I've never shown a hint of it, gestational or otherwise.
I am concerned that my son was given an antibiotic unnecessarily. He and I have the exact same symptoms, and my midwife thinks I have a virus. Another reason I'm glad she's doing that throat culture. Then again, Jake's pediatrician did say he had an ear infection... And I’ve learned today that it’s standard practice to treat all ear infections with antibiotics, even though some can be caused by a virus. I really disapprove of that, and wish I had known before getting the antibiotic. I don’t know if it would have made a difference in my decision to give my son antibiotics, but I could have certainly asked more questions. (sigh) I would have felt much better if the pediatrician had done a culture on Jake's throat. She has a busy-weird way about her, and I'm considering changing pediatricians. Except Jake is so rarely sick, so we usually only see her for well-baby check-ups and vaccinations, and it hardly takes any skill to measure the kid and see how very healthy he is. And I hate 'breaking in' new doctors. We'll see.
