Rebecca A.'s Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

December 12, 2000

He did it again! Let me start over and tell you all what happened on Friday. It’s our usual routine to get up in the morning, take Rylan’s diaper off, clean him up and let him roam around naked for awhile to air his little butt out. We use cloth diapers, and since I have to put the vinyl pants on him at night, I like to give him some room to breathe. His pooping schedule is very predictable … every other day and usually around noon. Well, Friday morning, I was letting him play in his room (naked) while I made my coffee and put the clean dishes away from the dishwasher. Then it got quiet.

The stench was unbearable! I thought breastfed babies poop was not supposed to stink, but to have a sweet odor. I don’t think so. At my first glance it looked as if he hadn’t finished going, so I grabbed a diaper to keep the mess from getting any bigger. That’s when he saw me and started crawling towards me. There was poop up his butt crack to the middle of his back, all over his thighs and feet; then he sat down and put his poop-covered hand in his mouth. That’s when I noticed his face; it was smeared all over his eyelids, up his nose and in his ears and hair! The dimensions of the stain on the carpet were about 18 x 5 inches. It was all matted down and you could see little finger marks in it. My husband was in the bathroom, so I yelled for him to start the bathwater. I was laughing so hard that those were the only words I could get out.

The second time is not so funny, though. Even though Rylan was smart enough to only eat it and not smear it all over his face, I still haven’t laughed yet. OK, maybe a little chuckle, but I don’t have DH home to clean up the carpet, so I think that may be what’s keeping me from seeing the humor.

Since I stay home with Rylan, I get to see all his firsts and I take a lot of pride in that. Well, Saturday, I had a baby shower to go to (another soon to be breastfeeding mommy!) and I left him home with DH. Wouldn’t you know that while I was gone, Rylan stood up for the first time all by himself! DH said that he was holding on to the fire place bricks, grabbed a toy in both hands and just stood up with the toy and put it in his mouth. Then he looked at DH and fell on his butt. I’ve convinced myself (since he has yet to do it again), that DH is lying and that he didn’t really stand and that he will eventually do it when I’m watching.

So, now Rylan has tooth number three and number four is right behind it. He nurses constantly when he is teething, and let’s me know he wants to by chewing on my shirt. This time, though, he has a runny nose. I really don’t know if there is a correlation, but he has no other symptoms than a runny nose. I really hope he doesn’t get sick. Well, I must go save the cat from Rylan’s lethal attacks!

Until next rime,

Reb
