Great news! I finally had the baby! His name is Bartholomew and was 8
pounds, 6 ounces and 20 inches when he was born. I started feeling contractions at
about 3 p.m. on July 13. They were four minutes apart and getting stronger, so I called
my doctor. I had also had bloody show all day so she told me to go to the
hospital. I had to wait until 4:45 p.m. for DH to arrive home. During that time
DS and I were playing with the neighbourhood kids. I was not even sure I was
in labour!
Finally he got home and off we went. By the time I got there and was admitted (5:20 p.m.) the contractions were really painful and three minutes apart. The nurse checked me and I was 4-1/2 centimeters dialated! The contractions started coming very quickly then and I started moaning and screaming really loudly. She checked me again at 6 p.m. and I was 6 centimeters dialated. It was at that point my doctor broke my water. Within half an hour the contractions were right on top of each other and I felt the urge to push. I started pushing at 6:50 p.m. and by 7 p.m. Bartholomew was born. Even though I had asked for an epidural, there was no time for it so I had a natural birth. My perenium reamained intact thanks to the wonderful warm compresses the nurse applied (actually they were pretty shocked that I did not need stiches!!). DS came to see us soon after and is very proud to be a big brother. A big thanks to Dr. Dahlia Chow and Pickering-Ajax Health Centre!
Bart started nursing right after his birth and for the first day was awake most of the time and nursing. He had no problems at all. The nurses were all shocked that I nursed a 2-year-old throughout my pregnancy. One of them even made a comment that she was surprised I did not have a miscarriage. Obviously they were not very informed on the subject. However I was pleasantly surprised that several nurses gathered in my room to ask me questions about nursing during pregnancy. It made me feel wonderful about my choice to continue to nurse DS. On the third day after Bart's birth, my breasts became engorged but it was not as painful as the first time. He is still nursing wonderfully although it is hard for me right now to tandem nurse with sore nipples!
Lots of Love!
