Ketherine's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

April 13, 2000

Well, it has been a long two weeks. With my father passing away there was a lot of activity around here. Most of my family is from out of town so that meant we had many guests to receive. Our house also looks like a flower store with all of the sympathy bouquets we received. I don't think I've ever seen so many flowers in one house!

Things are getting better for me though. I think his death was fairly easy for me to accept because we were expecting it for several months. However, his doctor told us that he had at least a few weeks left. He passed away about 3 days after the doctor told us this. I'm just glad that DS and I got to visit him one last time before he passed away.

I am now 26 weeks pregnant and I am still on short-term disability. I am so glad that I have this type of coverage because I definitely could not work right now. DS has been so happy that I have been home. I am also so excited that I can finally see him growing up. It is hard to imagine how much growing up you actually miss when you are at work unless you have taken some time off to be at home. I wish that I didn't go back to work after he was born because I missed so much of his development.

We recently joined the Parent and Child Enrichment (PACE) program at our local YMCA. DS really loves it because it gives him a chance to play with other kids. Although I have to stay with him in the center, it also gives me some time to relax as they have teachers to supervise the children to a certain degree. Today I also registered him for preschool in the fall. He will be one of the youngest kids as he is turning 2 next month. They usually don't take kids under 2 ½ so they had to evaluate him first to see if he had enough skills to be able to fit in with the older children. It is a very highly rated preschool and the tuition is not as expensive as I thought it would be. He will be going three days a week and the cost is just a tiny fraction of what I was paying for him to go to daycare for the same number of days! I think it is going to do both him and I a lot of good, especially with the baby on its way.

The flack has started again about me breastfeeding DS. Now its not so much that I am BF while pregnant, but that I should not BF both a newborn and toddler at the same time. Hasn't anyone heard of tandem nursing before? I was trying to explain the concept to my mother and she looked as if she were in total shock! I admit that yes, it will be a difficult adjustment. And yes, I'm sure DS will be jealous. But he is really only nursing before bed right now and sometimes in the morning too. My breasts really don't have a lot of milk right now so he does not nurse for very long anyway. We'll just have to see how it goes. I'll just do what I've done up to this point and play it by ear. I think the best solution to this dilemma is to follow his lead and determine from that what direction the BF will take.

Lots of Love,
Ketherine
