I am so excited! I am finally moving to the morning shift next week. I have been working nights for 8 months and it has really been difficult on my family and myself. I can finally have a normal life and a normal sleep pattern. DS will be really happy because he still enjoys nursing at night (when I'm home at night, that is!). DH is also very excited because he gets very frustrated on the weekends when I am tired all the time. I think it's hard for him to understand sometimes that I am normally awake at night and sleeping during the day. To completely switch this pattern on the weekend is very difficult especially now that I am 18 weeks pregnant! But, I don't have to worry about that anymore!
My pregnancy is going very well. I had a prenatal check-up on Monday and the doctor said that all was normal. I have finally gained some weight -- only 7 pounds so far. My morning sickness was so awful (correction, is so awful) that I can hardly keep any food down. In comparison to my first pregnancy, this one is definitely harder on my body. I had no morning sickness with DS and had gained about fifteen pounds by 18 weeks.
However, with DS I developed gestational diabetes and he ended up gaining more weight in-utero than he should have. He was born at 36 weeks and was 8 pounds, 2 ounces. I can’t imagine what he would have weighed at 40 weeks (12 pounds?). I am hoping I don’t develop GD with this one. I am trying to limit my sugar intake and everything had been fine so far (no sugar in my urine). But sometimes I just can’t resist a chocolate bar or some cookies. I think I should be OK, though. Last time I drank fruit juice like there was no tomorrow and my doctor said that this had contributed to my GD somewhat. I am trying to stick to water now, but I do have the occasional glass of OJ.
DS has fallen asleep the past few nights without nursing. He still nurses at bedtime, he just hasn’t nursed himself to sleep in a few days. I am glad that he has learned to fall asleep without nursing because sometimes nursing him to sleep is very hard on me (especially now that I am pregnant). I hope this does not change when I start to be home at night. I don't think that he is ready to be weaned yet because he still asks for "Boo Boo" at bedtime and grabs at my shirt. However, I do think that he is showing signs of self-led weaning. I think that nature is just taking its course. I have a feeling, though, that when the baby comes it will be hard for him to understand that the baby needs "Boo Boo" more than he does. I'll just have to wait and see.
Very tired and starting to look very pregnant,
Ketherine
