Read about the nursing relationship of this mother and son that lasted for almost a year.
November 30, 1999
Hello, my name is Jen and I'm the proud mother of a happily breastfed boy, born on September 7, 1999. His name is Christopher Jacob, but we call him by his middle name. He was 6 pounds, 15 ounces and 19 inches long at birth. Jacob's father and I are 26 years old, and will be married four years on April 20th. We live in the Northeast corner of Pennsylvania, about 50 miles from Scranton. Chris works as a Service Advisor for an auto dealership, and I have left my job as an Office Manager at a decal manufacturer to become a stay-at-home mom.
The decision to nurse was a rather difficult one for me to make. I have never been a "touchy-feely" kind of person, and wasn't sure I wanted that kind of contact with my baby. Nor was I sure I wanted to be the only one getting up for middle of the night feedings.
After I learned that breastfed babies are less likely to develop allergies or asthma, my decision became easy. I suffer from allergies year round, my mother has asthma, my sister has Cystic Fibrosis. Anything I could do to help my child stay healthy was worth doing.
Jacob's almost five months old now, and he's doing great. We had some difficulties getting the hang of things at first, but I got a lot of help from the lactation consultant at the hospital. Her support and encouragement made all the difference. It sometimes takes me by surprise how much I enjoy our nursing relationship, and I try not to think about when it will end.
I'm looking forward to sharing my thoughts and experiences with you on my journey as a nursing mommy!
Jen & Jacob =)
