First time mom who recently went to work full-time.
November 30, 1999
Hello everybody! I am very excited to start a diary at this website. I hope that it is beneficial to other breastfeeding moms.
Let me begin by telling you a bit about myself. I recently graduated with my bachelor's degree in nursing. I will become a registered nurse after I pass my state boards this summer. I have just recently started working full-time on the obstetrical floor.
I had my son in September of 2000 while I was in college. This was challenging due to the fact that I took one week off for maternity leave. But I was determined to breastfeed so I began pumping when my son was 4 days old.
I delivered a free standing birth center which is very conducive to breastfeeding due to the fact that I held Gavin immediatly after birth and nursed him right away and frequently. We had a good start, but did have a few challenges. I have flat nipples which I belived caused some extra soreness. I treated this with Lanolin and lots of air time to my nipples. He also had a mildly poor latch on which took a little work. At day 10, I had some baby blues and was having a hard time adjusting to the full time job of nursing a newborn who wanted to eat very frequently (I didn't give him a pacifier). At this point I decided that I could not breastfeed one moment longer and I was ready to give up. I tearfully called my mom who gave me support and encouraged me to not quit in a moment of crises. I stuck it out---and the benefits are wonderful! I am so thankful that I stuck to it through all the tough times. It has payed off ten fold.
My son is now nearly 9 months old and we are both still repeaing the benefits of breastfeeding. We have still have challenges such as squirmy nursing and he does not take a bottle. But I know now that any challenge can be overcome!
Like I mentioned I just started working full-time as a nurse. I will be working days this summer and then will move to nights after my orientation. This is a concern for me as Gavin still nurses at night. I also have started wondering about weaning. I have always planned on extended nursing but knowing that I could wean in 3 months fills me with mixed emotions that range from elation to deep grief.
I look forward to sharing our special relationship with you all!
