Carmajo's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

August 11, 2002

I thought I would dedicate this diary entry to the beginning of our breastfeeding journey.

Adrianna was taken to the breast for the first time March 5, 2002 at 1:43 p.m.
Ok, I am quacky! Yes I wrote the exact time down! My MIL was my teacher. As I wrote in my intro my MIL is a nurse in Labor & Delivery but now works in the Special Care Nursery. She did a great job except Adrianna was not too receptive. She was a very lazy nurser the first few weeks.
We had problems latching on so after 3 days I broke down and used a nipple shield.
I used the shield at home for several weeks until I ordered some more online from Medela and noticed a sort of disclaimer in the package upon there arrival. The information stated that the shield was not intended for long term use because it could cause a depletion in your milk supply. The neurotic person that I am freaked out. In a matter of a few days I weaned her off the shield. It was a very stressful time because with no help I taught Adrianna to latch on without the shield.

For the first few months I was a very shy nurser. I would go to another room to nurse Adrianna because I basically laid it all out. I was not a very conspicuous nurser. I could not ever master covering my one side while she nursed. After many feedings I am proud to say I am a pro.
I am so comfortable that I nursed her without anyone knowing at a family wedding reception last week.

Ok, now I have one complaint! No one ever warned me how it would feel when my milk came in. I had a c-section so I was in the hospital for 4 days and my milk came in while I was still in the hospital. I must have taken 10 warm showers in the first day.
I don't know what determines who much and how fast your milk comes in but my body kicked butt at it. By no means was I one bit of a complainer in the hospital even with a c-section. I only took pain medication to help my sleep during the night. I still could not believe the discomfort I felt from my milk production.
I know this sounds so petty and believe me it is sooo worth it but I could not believe something so "natural" could wreck havoc like it did. I did read about one remedy to help relieve the pain. Insert cold cabbage leaf sections into your bra to provided cold compresses. Evidently cabbage leaf sections will hold the coldness for quite awhile. I know what DH will be bringing daily to the hospital when we have our next child.

I think I have rambled on enough tonight.
I have lots of preparing to do for my return to the working world (part time) tomorrow so I better sign off for now.

Good luck to all new mothers! I greatly recommend the article Child-led Weaning The Way Natured Intended by April Almeida.
It is featured on the Breastfeed.com website front page.

Hugs,

Carmajo & Adrianna
