Amy's Diary Entries

February 4, 2000

Uuuggghhh~

I am dog tired. I was awake coughing all night, and my coughing kept Sam (who is still battling bronchitis) restless and in a light sleep. And my husband, well -- forget it. He averages about one good night of sleep per year. So, it goes without saying that we are a little less than one big happy family today.

(Some background: I work full time out of the home. My husband, Kenny, is a retired police detective, and he stays at home with Sam.)

I begrudgingly rolled out of bed this morning. It never gets any easier -- walking away from Sam while he cries "Mama!" and holds his hands out toward me. It's even harder on mornings like this!

I battled through work this morning, and when it was finally time for lunch, I hurried home to nurse Sam. My normally pleasant, happy-go-lucky baby is more accurately depicted at present as a grumpy little toad. He just doesn't feel well and it breaks my heart. His nose was completely stuffy, so I suctioned out as much of it as I could. Five screaming minutes later, I realized that he felt warm again. I took his temperature in his ear, which took another tantrum-filled minute and six unsuccessful tries. Not satisfied by this method of obtaining an accurate temperature, I tried to take his temperature rectally, which is his doctor's preferred method. He continued to scream, and just as I concluded taking care of him, Kenny showed up to be Sam's savior and rescued him from his evil mommy.

While I continued to take care of some chores with the remainder of my lunch hour, Kenny rocked Sam to sleep. I barely had 3 minutes to cuddle with him before I had to return to work. (I THINK his temperature was somewhere around 100 degrees, so nothing to really worry about at the moment.)

Times like this I figure that if I didn't nurse Sam he wouldn't like me at all. I so look forward to spending my lunch with him, but I usually end up having to do necessary things to him that he doesn't understand. I'm sure the little bugger wonders why his mother persecutes him so.

But this is Friday, and my calendar promises that tomorrow will be Saturday... I can't wait to spend some real, uninterrupted time with my baby boy.
