Abigail's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

September 29, 1999

I think our daughters are really finicky about their bedtime routine. They've gone back and forth between bottle and breast just fine from the beginning. Lately, we can't go anywhere after 5:00 p.m. without them becoming hysterical while we're gone. We really don't go anywhere, but we had two weddings that we wanted to go to and we thought we would try to go to the homecoming football game. HA! Lena and Liberty didn't think we needed to be gone that much.

Bryan and I tried to go to his cousin's wedding on the 18th. We were gone from 5:00 to 7:30. My mom and my sister, Tracey, were baby sitting and the girls were absolutely inconsolable. Usually, they will take a bottle just fine, but not that time. Then, on the 24th we tried to go to the football game. This time Bryan's mom and aunt watched them and we only made it 45 minutes before being paged to go home. It was awful. They were just screaming. As soon as we were there they were fine. We had another wedding to go to at 1:00 the next day and we were so afraid they were going to be hysterical again, but the church was only 3 blocks away from our house so if there were any problems, we could be paged and it wouldn't take us long to get home. Tracey and my mom were supposed to be watching them again, but my mom was watching my brother's son and one of my sister's daughters so she didn't come with Tracey. That made me even more afraid. But my sister assured me that everything would be fine. She brought my 6 year old niece, Taylor, with her to help, and our sister-in-law was also going to stop by later. I couldn't believe Tracey would even agree to watch them again after what they put her through last time.

During the entire wedding I just kept thinking that they were crying and Tracey was just not paging us because she wanted to be nice. We even skipped going through the receiving line because we felt so bad. We rushed home, thinking we were going to find two hysterical babies and my poor sister who couldn't do anything with them. After all that worrying, they were fine. They were so good. Lena even took a nap! That is unbelievable. Taylor read to them and played with them and they were fine. I couldn't believe it. Apparently, they just don't like their bedtime routine interrupted. Any other time of day, they'll take a bottle with no problems. I can deal with that. If Bryan and I ever want to go anywhere, it will just have to be before 5:00. It's easier on Lena and Liberty, which makes it easier on us. Some people keep telling us, "They're going to have to learn that they can't have mom and dad every time they cry, so just keep leaving them and they'll get the idea." Yeah, that sounds like fun. I want them to know that they *can* have mom and dad every time they cry. It's no fun to go away knowing that our daughters are going to be upset the whole time. I feel pretty confident that they'll be fine during the day, but we'll see. Mom and Tracey are watching them Friday afternoon. They're so brave!
