Watching Tuesday's events unfold on television was heartbreaking and surreal to all of America. My family and I are praying for the victims' families and friends, as well as for the leadership of our country.
I've heard people lamenting the fact that they have brought children into a world like this. That thought can be scary, but we can take heart in the fact that our children can be a light in this world, and the way we raise them can make a difference for the future of the world. We are mothering individuals who will better or worsen this world by their very presence. Lena and Liberty better my small world every day that they are in it. And every day I pray that God would give them many gifts, such as wisdom, patience, and compassion, but most of all I pray that they will know how to love. To love God with all their heart, to love themselves, and to love others. Lena and Liberty are only two children, but who knows what kind of an impact they will make when they are grown? Our best hope is that they will be decent, kind individuals whose presence in the lives of others will inspire more kindness, more compassion, more gentleness, and more love. As parents, this is where our hope must lie. We can not be afraid to raise our children in this world. We can only hope that our children will leave this world better than when they entered it.
If Lena and Liberty have 1/10 of the integrity and courage that the men and women of New York's fire and police departments who gave their lives trying to save lives, this world will be a better place. "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13
