August 18Libby had a doctor's appointment yesterday and she weighs 11 pounds, 8 ounces and she is 23 inches long. She isn't having any problems with eating and digesting.
Lena has been laughing and cooing quite a bit. They're both very social in the morning. At about 6:00 p.m. they start to get a little fussy. For a while Lena was really fussy, then we started giving her a couple of ounces of either formula or expressed breast milk at that time of night and that helped a lot. It was as if it wasn't coming fast enough and she didn't want to wait for it. After an ounce or two from the bottle, she would settle right down and nurse. She has since grown out of that, but it was weird for a while. I felt so bad about giving her a little supplement. I wanted to be able to breastfeed exclusively now that they're both home from the hospital. I felt like I wasn't enough for them. It didn't take me long to realize that Lena's wanting a supplement is not an insult to my mothering ability. Seriously, I was very touchy about this at first. I really wasn't prepared for how emotional breastfeeding would be. I'm actually jealous of the bottle!

I feel like we can actually go places now without worrying
about whether they're both going to want to eat at the same time. At
home, that's fine. With an audience, however, it's not. It's kind of
hard to be discreet when I'm nursing both of them -- especially if I'm not
in my little nursing nest with my pillows that are just the right size
for the job. If we do go anywhere as a family, we bring a bottle just in
case one of the babies can't wait for the other one to finish eating. I
had never even considered going anywhere by myself even for just a few
minutes because I can't breastfeed one and bottle feed the other by
myself. I'm not that coordinated. Anyway, today the three of us went to
the library. They were very good and I knew that I would have some time
if I fed them right before we left. It used to be that they would eat
every hour to hour and a half. That's counting from the beginning of one
feeding to the beginning of the next. It's slowed down to about every 2
and a half hours. There's a little bit of freedom now. It just keeps
getting better!
