Last weekend Bryan, his dad and his Uncle Tom had to install our new windows on the first floor of our house, which meant that Lena, Liberty, and I had to spend our days somewhere else so the girls could take their naps without having to be woken up prematurely to the sound of hammers, saws, and cussing -- mostly cussing. : ) I was feeling brave so I decided to take them to the bookstore where I used to work so I could look around and so the people I used to work with could tell me how cute my babies are!
It takes 45 minutes to get there so I made sure I nursed them right before we left so they would take their nap in the car and be fresh and chipper for their shopping trip. I figured I would shop a little, nurse, and we would be on our merry way. Well, I took my sweet time looking around and standing in line so by the time we left, both girls were just screaming at me. I managed to nurse them in the store -- they have cushy little seats to sit in, but I could only nurse one at a time so while I was nursing Liberty, I was also feeding Lena a banana. It must have been a sight! Lena wasn't too thrilled with her banana because she wanted to nurse. She was also getting sick and tired of being strapped in the stroller. If I had begun nursing Liberty 15 minutes before, everyone would have been happy. Lena would've been perfectly content to wait her turn. But no, I had to look around and waste time and ignore their early cues.
Then, when it was Lena's turn to nurse, Liberty did not think that was much fun at all. She did not want the rest of Lena's crummy old banana. She wanted to nurse and nobody was going to stop her. Finally, Lena was done nursing so I put her back in the stroller and headed out the door to find that it was raining! UGH! I didn't plan on it to be raining. Nobody asked me if it would be OK if it rained a little. It was so nice when I left the house. Luckily, my former co-worker, Bill was nice enough to sit with Lena and Liberty while I pulled up the car and put each of them in their car seats one at a time. Otherwise, one of my girls would've been getting pretty wet while waiting for me to put her sister in her car seat. I was so thankful that Bill was able to help me. And, of course, both girls were snoozing by the time I left the parking lot. Needless to say, that trip initially shattered my confidence. But then I realized that I kept telling myself that I should sit down and nurse long before either Lena or Liberty was getting impatient with me. If I would have listened to my instincts, I could have avoided all of that extra stress. If I would've nursed them before they were absolutely begging to nurse, we wouldn't have had this problem. So I've learned something. Whatever.
On the bright side, we have beautiful new windows. Much better than the 100-year-old windows that were there before. Now we can start the long process of drywalling--that's the worst part, I think. I can't wait until it's all finished. Next time I have to take the kids somewhere so the guys can work, I'll just take them to my sister's house. It's right next door -- no car seats, no strollers, no lines, no bananas instead of nursing, no reasons for babies to cry, no strangers staring at my crying babies. Sounds great!
