Abigail's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

February 4, 2002

Liberty peed on the potty for the first time ever last week! We’re not getting our hopes
up that she and Lena will be potty trained any time soon, though. Neither of them are
really all that interested in using the potty, so we’re not pushing it. But last week, they
were running around naked before getting their pajamas on (as usual) and we decided to
see if they would sit on the potty for a little while. Well, they ran back and forth from the
bathroom to the play room and we weren’t really expecting anything, but Liberty came
out and said she needed a wipe and when I checked in her potty, she had peed! That was
exactly a week ago and she apparently has decided that she doesn’t want to sit on the
potty ever again. ; )

Seriously, Bryan and I keep telling ourselves that we’re not going to freak out about it
and we’re going to just let them take their time, but I must admit that I’m feeling a little
bit of pressure. They’ll be 3 in April, and that has been the magic potty-training age for
so many years that it’s still stuck in my brain even though now the pros are saying that
it’s best to wait until the child is between 3 and 4 years old to train. Lucky for me, all of
this pressure is self inflicted so I guess I can just stop thinking about it any time I want.
After all, they won’t be 4 for 14 more months! I guess the pressure’s off, then. It really
helps to write this stuff down and put everything into perspective. ; ) I feel much better
now. No more potty pressure!

Speaking of pressure, several months ago I had to come up with a way to avoid having
our nursing sessions last longer than they needed to because I was experiencing some
extreme pressure from Lena and Liberty. Since they are 2 years old, they sometimes like
to exert a little bit of power and control over certain areas of their lives. Can you
imagine 2-year-old children acting like that? ; ) Well, some days they would decide that
they wanted control over how long they nursed whether I liked it or not. They would
(very loudly) demand to keep nursing well after we should’ve been finished--huge power
struggle. Now, every time we nurse I wind a music box and then when the music is over,
we’re done nursing. It’s totally magical! Since I’m not the one putting an end to the
nursing session, Lena and Liberty don’t care. I ask them how many times they want me
to turn the wind up thing (2-4 times), and when the music is all done, they stop nursing
without so much as a whimper! It really is a beautiful thing.

Thanks for reading! Have a great day!
