Abigail's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

January 15, 2002

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! I can’t believe it’s all over, but I’m glad
it is. Hopefully, we’ll have enough time to recover before Christmas comes around
again. ; )

Liberty was really sick right after the holidays again this year. Last year, she was
hospitalized for pneumonia twice immediately following Christmas. Bryan and were
afraid this was going to be a repeat performance. We have a nebulizer at home to give
her breathing treatments when needed, so her nurse practitioner suggested we use that
and also give her some antibiotics because if we took her to the hospital at this time of
year she would probably catch something worse. Ordinarily, I don’t like to give her
antibiotics unless I know for certain that she has a bacterial infection. But her fever was
getting pretty high and lasting for longer than I’m comfortable with, and she hasn’t been
on any antibiotics in a year. So with her history of bacterial pneumonia it was worth it to
me to just try the antibiotics in order to avoid the risk that a trip to the hospital would
entail.

Up to that point, she and Lena had only been nursing twice a day, but all bets are off
during a sickness like that. Liberty didn’t want to eat or drink anything because she just
felt so miserable. In the back of my mind I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough
milk to sustain her, however, I never should have doubted for a minute because after one
night of Liberty being latched on throughout the night, I felt fuller in the morning. Of
course, I encouraged her to nurse throughout the day as well. She went 3 full days
without eating or drinking anything besides breastmilk, yet she didn’t lose any weight.
How’s that for a good reason for me to continue to breastfeed? If I wasn’t nursing, I
would’ve had to take Liberty to the hospital so they could’ve put her on an IV to get
nutrition into her. For Liberty’s sake, I am so glad we didn’t have to do that. Anyway,
she’s all better now and we are so thrilled!

Lena is especially thrilled to have her sister back to normal. While Liberty was sick,
Lena kept giving her special toys or books to try to make her feel better. Lena would try
to talk to her, but Liberty just didn’t want to talk. Lena would turn to me and say,
“Mommy, Wibby won’t talk to me. She doesn’t wike me anymore. She won’t say hi.” I
had to reassure her that Liberty just didn’t feel good and that she still loved her. I was so
surprised that Lena would react that way. “She doesn’t wike me anymore”? Where did
that come from? Once when Lena was talking to her, Liberty would reach up and touch
her nose and I said, “See? She’s showing you that she loves you by touching your little
nose. Isn’t that nice?” The look on Lena’s face was priceless! She definitely understood
that Liberty was trying to tell her that she was still her very best friend. After that, Lena
apparently had enough reassurance and she was able to give Liberty the space that she
needed.

Well, hopefully I will have more time to update this diary. Lena and Liberty are doing so
many new things, so I will try to write more soon!
