follow along with a mom of twins as she captures her special nursing moments.
November 30, 1999
I can't believe how much Lena and Liberty change from week to week. We had stopped giving them solids for a while because they just didn't seem too eager. Lena was especially disinterested. All of the sudden, they were both grabbing at our plates *constantly* so we started feeding them solids again. They loved it right away this time! Lena even loved her carrots. That was a surprise. Since then, they've eagerly anticipated each meal. They even fed themselves some scrambled egg yolk. They did pretty well on their own. I think they liked squishing it between their fingers better than eating it, though.
Liberty's first top tooth poked through shortly before Christmas and her second top tooth is coming through today. I think she's ready to give those teeth a workout. We're going to broaden their food horizons, but I don't know how far we'll go. I keep thinking that there's nothing that is as good for them as breast milk so I don't want to replace too many feedings with solids yet.
Last week I wrote about people asking me how long I'll continue to nurse and that made me think -- if we could buy something in the store that was as good for children as breast milk is, no one would ever question giving it to children of all ages. It's just the package that breast milk comes in that makes it so hard for people to handle. I think if everyone really did the research to see how good it is for babies and mothers, there would be less of a stigma attached to extended nursing. Maybe next time somebody asks me that dreaded question, I'll tell them to do some research on Breastfeed.com and then they can tell me how long they think I should nurse. : )
