Q&A: Breastfeeding Immediately After Birth

Q: Why do experts tell women to breastfeed right after giving birth?

A: Babies are born alert and awake; this is the best time to get them to latch onto the breast. An hour or so after the birth, babies begin to get sleepy and take a nap for a few hours. The longer it takes to get breastfeeding started, the more likely it is that the staff will want to feed Baby formula.
