Tough Breastfeeding Issues
Public Nursing, Pumping at Work and Misguided Advice
By Jackie Rupp
La Leche League suggests discussing pumping at work before the baby is born to prepare everyone and allow the employer time to make any necessary changes.
Find a location to pump that works best for you and everyone else. An office, cubicle or employee lounge works well if you follow the same habits you use when breastfeeding in public. If you are not able to pump there, try an allowable space that you know is rarely used.
Sometimes advice can undermine your confidence, but not if you are equipped with polite responses that show your knowledge and comfort. Remember, advice is usually given out of love. Many people, especially mothers who have never breastfed, have misconceptions about the process. Offer genuine thanks for their concern. Don't get drawn into a debate, which may make others feel belittled. A brief explanation should suffice. Switch to another parenting topic, something else they can help you with. Another good response is to share a personal story to let them understand your breastfeeding experience. When tense situations arise, it's best to take comfort in your choices and express your happiness in breastfeeding your baby.
