The Pumping Mom
A Day in the Life of a Breastfeeding Working Mom
By Teri Brown
Several programs have been established for working moms who wish to pump. Motherwear and Medela both have packets of information that mothers can give to their employers.
"It's best if mothers make their plans before their babies are born," says Dr. Kendall-Tackett. "Even after, they can ask their employers for a private place to pump. The bathroom is a last resort because of the germs on the surfaces in a bathroom."
Connections and Accomplishments
One concern many mothers have is reconnecting after their baby has been bottle-fed all day. Dr. Kendall-Tackett says that shouldn't be a major worry. "Every mother and baby is different, but the overwhelming majority of babies can switch back and forth just fine," she says. "Some babies may come to not liking breastfeeding after being on a bottle, but most will be OK. Mothers can reconnect with their babies by spending time with them before they go to work, at the care provider's and immediately after they come home. In addition, a lot of mothers find that sleeping next to their babies offers a great way to reconnect after being apart all day." In spite of the difficulties, Hawley is now glad she took the extra effort to breastfeed her baby – even while working full time. "Looking back, I am proud of what I was able to accomplish with pumping: exclusively breastfeeding my son until he was 6 months old."
