Earth Mother-Raising Your Child With a Back-to-nature Approach

Not on a Whim

Make no mistake, "earth mothers" have done their homework. Many have read countless books on parenting and have come to their style of parenting through research and soul searching. Kamath stumbled on her style of mothering after reading countless books on homeschooling. Betancourt found that attachment parenting helped calm her high needs child. Aldort believes that many parents come to this type of parenting because they wish to have a different relationship with their children than they have with their own parents.

Whatever their reasons, "earth mothers" are definitely making an impact. Books and magazines on attachment parenting abound, and support organizations such as Attachment Parenting International are growing. Perhaps it is because of how loving, comfortable and straightforward this type of parenting sounds. You simply set aside all the experts and let your infant tell you what she needs.

"It is about being so close to your child that you know what she needs and you respond to it in a natural and loving flow," says Aldort. "With rare exceptions, when you are responsive and bonded with your baby and follow her lead, you will breastfeed her as long as both of you thrive in doing so, and you will sleep with her because you want to be there for her in every way, and you will enjoy this amazing closeness."
