Breastfeeding Moms
Get to Know Your Fellow Nursing Moms
By Teri Brown
Wright had many reasons to breastfeed her child. "I was convinced, mainly because of the things I had read in many books and articles," she say. "In addition, during our pregnancy classes, the instructors said you could save $1,200 per year by not using formula. That's a chunk of change – so saving money was another incentive."
All was not perfect, however, and there were times when Wright wanted to quit. "I thought I was going to die during the first six weeks of trying to breastfeed," she says. "It was awful! My baby could not latch on. The lactation specialists kept trying to show me different ways to hold him: the football hold, the lap hold, etc. It wasn't until quite a few visits to the lactation specialists and tears of frustration that they figured out my baby needed a nipple shield in order to latch on."
Wright kept at it because of the support she received from the lactation specialist and her desire to do what was right for her baby. Now that their breastfeeding time is nearing the end, she is delighted with her persistence. "I definitely think breastfeeding is a wonderful way to bond with my son," she says. "I sing to him and talk with him, stroke his hair and back. Now that he's one, he gets a big smile and giggle when we sit down to nurse! While the first six weeks were awful, once I got the hang of it, breastfeeding became enjoyable and relaxing."
