10. At the time of birth, a mother will have:

a. Milk-filled breasts
b. White, flowing milk
c. A few drops of colostrum, or "first milk"
d. A "letdown" of milk

The answer is C. Colostrum is the "first milk" that mothers produce, which is present during late pregnancy and at the birth. It begins with just a few drops, but it is very important for babies to receive colostrum. As hormones change following birth, the colostrum begins to turn to flowing milk.

11. Breast milk "comes in"

a. When the baby is born
b. Two to four days following birth
c. Two to four hours following birth
d. Only when the mother is breastfeeding

The answer is B. The breast milk "comes in" two to four days following birth, depending upon the mother's body and how often she is nursing. Certain medical procedures can affect breastfeeding. For example, it may take longer for milk to come in following a Cesarean birth.

12. Certain things can interfere with breastfeeding, such as:

a. Bottle feeding without pumping for the missed breastfeeding session
b. Feeding the baby with a bottle before breastfeeding has been established
c. Separation of Mother and Baby following birth
d. A, B and C

The answer is D. Parents can take a class or read about breastfeeding to inform themselves about how to deal with difficulties and ensure success. At the hospital, if Mother and Baby are separated, send the father with the baby to make sure that the baby is not given a bottle.
