There She Blows!
Projectile Vomiting in Infants
By Shannon McKelden
"An infant who is 'allergic' to the mom's breast milk is probably allergic to the cow's milk and/or soy proteins present from the mother's diet and the baby would be OK if the mom strictly eliminated cows milk and soy from her own diet," Dr. Sanders says. Today, the usual formula choices for infants felt to be allergic to cow's milk and soy are special hypoallergenic formulas (the proteins are broken down so babies won't have an allergic response to them). These include Nutramigen and Alimentum. Of course, always check with your physician regarding changing your infant's diet.
"Usual initial approaches to reflux include offering the baby relatively small, frequent feedings, and burping gently after feeds," Dr. Sanders says. "Breastfed babies may have less trouble with reflux because breast milk is rapidly absorbed from the stomach. Formula-fed babies can have rice cereal added to the bottle to thicken the feeds. If a baby is irritable and feeding poorly he may benefit from medication to reduce the formation of stomach acid."
Heather Truett, a mother of two from Brandon, Miss., whose son was diagnosed with reflux, found that Zantac and a special formula helped with the problem. "I began using Dr. Brown's [Natural Flow] bottles," she says. "Those bottles were a lifesaver."
