"I would definitely recommend such classes to others," odnar says. "It gives you a great overview of what to expect and allows for you to practice various holding positions and ask questions."
The Lactation Resource Center in Chatham, N.J., is one of many non-hospital-affiliated lactation information centers opening up around the country. The center, which consists of a store offering breastfeeding-friendly products and parenting and breastfeeding classes, is run by lactation consultants with over 20 years' experience in helping new moms. Maria Parlapiano, director of the Lactation Resource Center, suggests that those pregnant women interested in such classes make sure that they are given by a reputable, experienced, board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC). The center offers a class called "Breast Feeding Your Baby."
"A woman can benefit from taking this class by arming herself with the correct information," Parlapiano says. "What moms complain about most is the myriad of conflicting information, which begins when they are pregnant and continues indefinitely. Demystifying and detangling this information for our clients is a major focus."
Parlapiano believes that keeping the information simple is essential to success. "By establishing a relationship with a lactation consultant prior to delivery, a new mom will seek help sooner, thereby insuring a more successful and less stressful breastfeeding experience," she says.
Dads are often welcome at these classes. You can find out if your area has such a center by checking brochures in doctors' offices, hospitals, newspaper ads, the Internet or through your local La Leche League group.
